Trailpedia exists to make outdoor knowledge clear, accurate, and trustworthy. These guidelines describe how we create, source, and maintain our content.
How we write
Each term opens with a concise, plain-language definition, followed by the context that makes it genuinely useful — how something works, when it matters, and how it compares to related concepts. We aim to be accurate first and readable always.
Our sources
We ground content in recognised authorities for each field, including (among others):
- Climbing & mountaineering: UIAA, the American Alpine Club, and the AMGA
- Avalanche & snow safety: Avalanche.org, AIARE, and the American Avalanche Association
- Health & first aid: the CDC and the Wilderness Medical Society
- Land, navigation & ethics: the National Park Service, Leave No Trace, USGS, and NOAA
- Gear & materials: primary manufacturer and standards documentation
Where a page draws on specific sources, we list them on that page.
Review & accuracy
Content is reviewed by the Trailpedia Editorial Team. Topics that affect health and safety — such as avalanche, altitude, cold and heat injury, and water safety — receive extra scrutiny and carry clear disclaimers reminding readers that our content is educational and not a substitute for professional instruction or judgement.
Corrections
If you find a mistake, please tell us via our contact page with the page name and the issue. We review and correct verified errors promptly.
Independence
Our tools and definitions are free to use. We do not accept payment for favourable placement in definitions, comparisons, or recommendations. Should we introduce advertising or affiliate links in future, they will be clearly disclosed.
Not professional advice
Outdoor activities carry real risk. Please read our Disclaimer before relying on any information here.
