What Is Goose Down?

Goose down is down sourced from geese, traditionally regarded as premium because geese are larger birds that produce bigger down clusters, which can reach the highest fill powers (often 800–900+). At equal fill power, goose and duck down perform similarly, but the very highest-loft, lightest gear typically uses goose down, usually at a higher price.

What Is Synthetic Insulation?

Synthetic insulation uses fine polyester fibers, arranged as continuous filaments or short staple clusters, to mimic down's air-trapping loft. Its key advantage is that it keeps much of its warmth when wet and dries fast, plus it's cheaper and hypoallergenic. The trade-offs versus down are more weight and bulk for the same warmth and a shorter useful lifespan.

What Is Down Insulation?

Down insulation is the soft, fluffy plumage found beneath the exterior feathers of geese and ducks, used in jackets and sleeping bags for the best warmth-for-weight of any insulation. It lofts to trap air efficiently and packs down small, but loses most of its insulating ability when wet and dries slowly — unless treated as hydrophobic down.

What Is Schoeller Dryskin?

Schoeller Dryskin is a premium Swiss-made softshell fabric known for combining breathability, stretch, abrasion resistance, and water and wind repellency in a single durable textile. Often finished with Schoeller's nanosphere DWR, it's used in climbing and mountain pants and jackets where freedom of movement, durability, and weather resistance all matter.

What Is drirelease Fabric?

drirelease is a fabric technology that blends a small proportion of natural fiber (such as wool or cotton) with fast-drying synthetics, engineered so moisture is wicked and released to evaporate quickly. It aims to combine the comfort and feel of natural fibers with the fast-drying performance of synthetics, often with a built-in odor-control treatment, in base layers and active tees.

What Is Hemp Fabric?

Hemp fabric is a natural textile made from the bast fibers of the hemp plant, valued for strength, durability, breathability, and sustainability — hemp grows fast with little water and few inputs. It's naturally resistant to mold and UV and softens with use, and is often blended with organic cotton or recycled fibers in casual and eco-focused outdoor apparel.

What Is Waxed Cotton?

Waxed cotton is a traditional fabric made by impregnating tightly woven cotton with wax to make it water-resistant and wind-resistant while remaining durable and developing a characteristic patina. Heritage and rugged-style outdoor wear use it for its classic look, toughness, and re-waxable longevity, though it's heavier, less breathable, and not as waterproof as modern membranes.

What Is Moisture Wicking?

Wicking is a fabric's ability to draw sweat away from the skin and spread it across the fabric's surface, where it evaporates faster. This keeps you drier, warmer, and more comfortable during activity and is the defining job of a good base layer. Synthetics and merino wool wick well; cotton does not, which is why cotton is avoided in cold or strenuous conditions.

What Is Pertex Equilibrium?

Pertex Equilibrium is a family of lightweight, breathable fabrics engineered to move moisture and manage temperature during high-output activity, rather than to be fully waterproof. Often using a dual-surface construction that pushes sweat away from the skin and spreads it to dry fast, it's used in active wind shells, base and mid layers, and breathable insulation liners.

What Is Pertex Diamond Fuse?

Pertex Diamond Fuse is a lightweight fabric engineered for dramatically improved tear and abrasion resistance, using high-tenacity yarns in a fine diamond-shaped ripstop grid. It lets insulated jackets and shells stay light and soft while resisting the snags, scuffs, and tears that plague delicate ultralight fabrics, extending durability without much added weight.
