Acclimatization: How the Body Adapts to Altitude

Acclimatization is the process by which the body gradually adapts to the reduced oxygen available at high altitude, through physiological changes such as faster breathing, increased red blood cell production, and other adjustments over days. Proper acclimatization — chiefly ascending slowly — is the single most important strategy for preventing altitude illness on high mountains and treks.

What Is Mountaineering?

Mountaineering is the sport of climbing mountains, combining hiking, rock, snow, and ice climbing with the skills to travel safely in high, remote, and glaciated terrain. It ranges from non-technical walk-up peaks to committing alpine ascents, and demands fitness, navigation, weather judgment, and hazard management alongside climbing ability.
